God’s word today:
“Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severe a punishment does he deserve who has TRAMPLED THE SON OF GOD underfoot, who has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has INSULTED THE SPIRIT OF GRACE? For we know Him who said: ‘Vengeance is Mine; I will repay.’ And again: ‘The Lord will judge His people.’ It is a FEARFUL THING to fall into the hands of the living God.”
(Hebrews 10:28-31)
Why is it described as “FEARFUL”?
The word “fearful” here implies more than just ordinary fear. The writer of Hebrews is speaking about the severity of God’s judgment regarding willful sin and the rejection of Christ.
Consider the context:
1. Because God is a living and holy Judge.
God loves, but His love does not mean He overlooks sin. His holiness and justice remain in effect.
2. Because what is being rejected is not merely a rule, but the “Son of God.”
Verse 29 uses three very serious images:
* “trampling the Son of God underfoot” — treating Christ as if He were worthless;
* “regarding the blood of the covenant as unclean” — considering the blood of Christ, which sanctifies, as meaningless;
* “insulting the Spirit of grace” — rejecting the testimony and work of the Holy Spirit who leads people to Christ.
So, the issue is not simply that someone has fallen into sin.
The warning concerns a conscious, stubborn, and persistent rejection of Christ after having known the truth of the Gospel.
Sometimes we are afraid to read verses like Hebrews 10:31. However, this warning is not given to make someone struggling with sin say,
“I have failed. God surely won’t accept me anymore.”
No.
In fact, if your heart still says, “Lord, forgive me. I want to return,” it means your heart is still willing to respond to God’s truth; therefore, come to Him.
When we fall, return.
When we sin, repent.
For the very hand of God the Judge that serves as a hand of judgment for those who persist in rejecting Him is the Father’s hand, open to those who come to Him in repentance.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus,
forgive us if our hearts grow cold or hard, or if we take Your grace lightly. Thank You that Your blood has paid the price for our sins in full.
Help Your servant to remain believing, faithful, and steadfast in holding fast to You until the end of my life.
