God’s word today:
“Therefore it was necessary that the copies of the things in the heavens should be purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another— He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. And as IT IS APPOINTED FOR MEN TO DIE ONCE, BUT AFTER THIS THE JUDGEMENT, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.”
(Hebrews 9:23-28 NKJV)
Hebrews 9:27 contains a profound truth that answers the question, “Why should a person who is still alive believe in and receive Jesus Christ as Savior?” The answer is that after death, there is no longer an opportunity to receive eternal salvation: “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.” (verse 27)
This verse teaches several important biblical truths:
* Every person has only one life to live on this earth.
* There is no second chance to repent after death.
* The Bible does not teach reincarnation.
* A person’s eternal destiny is determined while he or she is still living in this world.
As long as a person is still breathing, God’s door of grace remains open. He or she can still:
* repent,
* believe in Jesus Christ,
* receive the forgiveness of sins,
* and obtain eternal life.
However, when a person dies, the time for making that decision has come to an end. What remains is to stand before God, the righteous Judge.
That is why the Bible continually calls people to respond to God’s invitation ‘today’, not to put it off until tomorrow.
Let us live each day in faith, repentance, and hope as we eagerly await the second coming of Christ.
Prayer:
“Lord Jesus, thank You for dying once and for all to redeem me from my sins. While I still have life, help me to live in repentance, faith, and obedience to You until the end of my days. Amen.”
