Daily Bread: A Foreshadowing of Christ, Our Eternal High Priest

God’s word today:

“For Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High; he went out to meet Abraham as Abraham was returning from defeating the kings, and blessed him. To him, Abraham also gave a tenth of everything.
ACCORDING TO THE MEANING OF HIS NAME, Melchizedek is first of all KING OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, and also KING OF SALEM, that is, KING OF PEACE. He is without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life; and because HE WAS MADE LIKE THE SON OF GOD, he remains a priest forever. Consider how great that man was, to whom Abraham, our patriarch, gave a tenth of the best of the spoils. And those among the sons of Levi who receive the priestly office have a commandment, according to the Law, to collect tithes from the people of Israel—that is, from their own brethren—even though these also are descendants of Abraham. But Melchizedek, who was not of their lineage, collected tithes from Abraham and blessed him—the one who held the promises. Indeed, it is undeniable that the lesser is blessed by the greater. And here mortal men receive tithes, but there, He of whom it is testified that He lives. Thus, it can be said that through Abraham, tithes were also collected from Levi—who had the right to receive tithes—because he was still in the body of his ancestor when Melchizedek met that ancestor.”

MELCHIZEDEK – TYPE OF JESUS

The author of the Book of Hebrews uses the story of Melchizedek (written in Genesis 14:18–20) to demonstrate that Melchizedek’s priesthood was superior to the Levitical priesthood, and also to show that Melchizedek possessed a higher priestly authority than Abraham in that event. Thus, Melchizedek serves as a type of Christ—the High Priest who is far greater than the entire Levitical priesthood.

After winning a great battle, Abraham did not boast. He recognized that the victory was not the result of human strength or strategy, but of God’s help. Therefore, upon meeting Melchizedek—priest of God Most High—Abraham willingly gave a tenth of the spoils of war.

This demonstrates that, in Abraham’s life, tithing emerged as an expression of faith, gratitude, and the acknowledgment that all victory and blessing come from God.

IF ABRAHAM HONORED THE PRIEST ‘MELCHIZEDEK’ WHO FORESHADOWED CHRIST, HOW MUCH MORE NOW ARE WE CALLED TO HONOR CHRIST HIMSELF—not merely through material offerings, but by dedicating our entire lives, time, talents, and hearts to Him.

Today, let us remember that every blessing, opportunity, success, and victory comes from the hand of the Lord. The proper response is not to live with a sense of ownership, but of stewardship with a heart full of gratitude, worship, and obedience to Christ—our High Priest who lives forever. Amen.
