Daily Bread: Our Great High Priest Who Lives Forever

😇 Shalom to all.
God’s word today:

“In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.” And he says in another place, “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.””
‭‭(Hebrews‬ ‭5‬:‭5‬-‭6‬ ‭NIV‬‬)

During Israel’s journey, God appointed priests who came exclusively from the descendants of Aaron. They served only during their lifetime, and when they died, they were replaced by the next priest. Furthermore, they were ordinary human beings affected by sin, so they had to offer sacrifices for their own sins before offering sacrifices on behalf of the people (Hebrews 5:3).

In contrast, Jesus is a PRIEST FOREVER IN THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK.
This means that His priesthood is not based on descent from the tribe of Levi (Aaron himself was from the tribe of Levi).

The name of Melchizedek first appears in Genesis 14 as the king of Salem and the priest of God Most High. He was not from the tribe of Levi, because this event took place long before Levi was born. Through Melchizedek, God provided a foreshadowing of a priesthood that is greater than the Aaronic priesthood. Jesus is the perfect fulfillment of that foreshadowing.

This truth, revealed through the priesthood of Melchizedek, brings great comfort to every believer. For our salvation does not depend on a human priest, but on Jesus Christ, our Great High Priest who lives forever. He never ceases to intercede for us before God the Father.
● When we fall, we have a compassionate High Priest who understands our weaknesses.
● When we pray, we come through Him who has opened the way for us to approach the throne of grace.

Prayer,
Lord Jesus, thank You for being the eternal High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek. Thank You for offering Yourself as the perfect sacrifice once for all, and for continuing to intercede for me before God the Father. Help me to come boldly to Your throne of grace each day, trusting completely in Your finished work and unfailing love. In Your holy name I pray, Amen.

Bless you
