Daily Bread: Focus on God, Not the Giants

God’s word today:

“Now WE who HAVE BELIEVED ENTER that rest, just as God has said, “So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ” And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.” And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.””

NOT REPEAT ISRAEL’s MISTAKE

The generation of Israel that came out of Egypt witnessed extraordinary demonstrations of God’s power. They saw the ten plagues, crossed the Red Sea on dry ground, received manna from heaven, and were guided daily by the pillar of cloud and fire. Again and again, God proved His faithfulness.

Yet when they arrived at the border of the Promised Land:
* They focused more on the giants than on God.
* They focused more on the obstacles than on the One who had delivered them.

Though God had promised them the land, they responded with unbelief and said, “We cannot do it.”Therefore, GOD’s ANGER WAS DIRECTED AT THEIR PERSISTENT UNBELIEF. This is why God was angry. Despite overwhelming evidence of His faithfulness, Israelites REFUSED TO TRUST His Word. Their unbelief was ultimately a rejection of God’s character, God’s promise, and God’s proven faithfulness.

Again a verse in Hebrews reminds us that the Israelites “were not able to enter, because of their UNBELIEF” (Hebrews 3:19).

The warning is clear: it is possible to hear God’s promises, witness His works, and still fail to enter His rest if we respond with unbelief.
* God’s rest is the enjoyment of what God has already accomplished and promised.

When challenges arise, by grace may we choose not to focus on the giants but to trust in God. Faith does not deny the existence of obstacles; faith remembers the faithfulness of God.

Today, let us not repeat Israel’s mistake. Let us hear God’s Word, trust His promises, persevere in faith, and enter the rest He has prepared.

Prayer;
Father God, forgive me for the times I have focused more on my obstacles than on Your faithfulness. Guard my heart from unbelief and help me to trust Your Word even when circumstances seem difficult. Help me to enter Your rest by believing You and following You wholeheartedly. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
