Daily Bread: Faith That Shapes the Next Generation

God’s word today:

“BY FAITH Moses, AFTER HE WAS BORN, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and THEY WERE NOT AFRAID of the king’s command. By faith Moses, AFTER HE HAD GROWN UP, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, because he chose to suffer with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He regarded disgrace for the sake of CHRIST AS GREATER WEALTH than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.”
(Hebrews 11:23–26 TB)

Hebrews 11:23–26 shows us that Moses’ faith did not appear out of nowhere. Before Moses himself is mentioned as a man of faith, the Bible first records THE FAITH OF HIS PARENTS.

In Old Testament, Exodus 2:1–10, we see that Moses’ parents, Amram and Jochebed, faced an extremely dangerous situation. Pharaoh had commanded that every Hebrew baby boy be killed (Exodus 1:22). Yet they chose to save Moses.

Hebrews 11:23 explains why, for“they were not afraid of the king’s command.”

This does not mean that they had no sense of fear at all. They were facing the power of Pharaoh, a great king with a powerful army. But THEIR FEAR OF GOD WAS GREATER THAN THEIR FEAR OF MAN.

What is interesting is that the faith of Moses’ parents was later reflected in Moses’ own life. Moses had the opportunity to enjoy life in the Egyptian palace. He could have chosen comfort, status, wealth, and a future that, from a human perspective, appeared very promising. But when Moses grew up, he chose to stand with the people of God.

He also had to make a decision of faith: “He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin” (Hebrews 11:25).

Often, we think that the greatest inheritance we can give our children is a good education, a good career, a good home, or a comfortable life.

All of these things are good. But there is something far more valuable: GIVING THEM AN EXAMPLE OF FAITH.

Therefore, fathers and mothers, do not underestimate the example of faith you are giving in your own home. Children do not only hear what we say about faith. They also watch:
* how you pray when you face problems;
* how you continue to trust God when circumstances do not meet yourvexpectations;
* how you choose truth rather than personal gain;
* how you forgive;
* how you honor the Word of God;
* and whether you truly place God above the comforts of life.

May our children see the example of a life of faith in us, so that one day they may personally be able to say:

“I have seen from my parents that God can be trusted. Therefore, I also want to trust Him.”Amen.

Prayer:
Lord, strengthen every father and mother to be examples of faith to their children. Give them courage to choose what is right even when it is difficult, and give them wisdom to guide the next generation to know and love You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
