Daily Bread: When It Seems Impossible, God Is Still Faithful

God’s word today:

“And by FAITH even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was ENABLED to bear children because she CONSIDERED HIM FAITHFUL who had made the promise. And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.”
‭‭(Hebrews‬ ‭11‬:‭11‬-‭12‬ ‭NIV‬‬)

Hebrews 11:11–12 gives a very powerful testimony that true faith does not depend on human ability, but on the FAITHFULNESS and POWER of God.

There are several important things to understand:

1. Sarah faced something that was humanly impossible.

Genesis 18:11 and Hebrews 11:12 tell us that “Sarah was past childbearing age” and that Abraham was “as good as dead” in terms of his ability to father children.

This means that, biologically speaking, Sarah was no longer in a condition to conceive and give birth.

But Sarah’s faith did not focus on, “What can I still do?” Rather, she focused on, “Who is the One who has made the promise?”

2. Sarah’s strength came from her faith in God’s faithfulness.

The explanation given in Hebrews is that Sarah “considered Him faithful who had promised.”

This is the heart of Sarah’s faith.

God did not ask Sarah to believe in the ability of her own body. God asked Sarah to believe in THE PERSON WHO MADE THE PROMISE.

From Abraham and Sarah—two people who were already old and, humanly and biologically speaking, unable to produce offspring—God brought forth a multitude of descendants.

And the climax was not merely the birth of Isaac.

Through Abraham’s descendants, God carried out His plan of salvation, which ultimately reached its fulfillment in Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:1; Galatians 3:16).

Therefore, Sarah’s faith became part of a work of God that was far greater than what she could see at that moment.

There are times when our circumstances seem to say:

“It is too late.”
“It is impossible.”
“There is no strength left.”
“How could God’s promise possibly be fulfilled?”

Sarah understood what it was like to face such circumstances.

Yet Sarah chose to consider something greater than her circumstances: “He who had promised was faithful.”

This is faith that comes from hearing and believing the voice of God’s promise.

Learn from Sarah: do not focus only on your circumstances—look to the God who made the promise. He is the faithful God.

Prayer:
O Lord, when I face circumstances that seem impossible, help me to keep my eyes on You. Enable me to continue believing that You are faithful to every promise You have made. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
