God’s word today:
(Hebrews 10:32–35)
“Remember the days gone by. AFTER you RECEIVED THE LIGHT, you SUFFERED greatly because you endured a hard struggle—whether being made a spectacle through insults and suffering, or sharing in the hardships of those treated in such a way. Indeed, you sympathized with those in prison and accepted the confiscation of your property with joy, because you knew that you POSSESSED A BETTER AND MORE LASTING POSSESSION.
THEREFORE, DO NOT THROW AWAY YOUR CONFIDENCE, for a great reward awaits it.”
In the reflection on Hebrews 10:32–35, there is an important question for us to ponder:
“What is it that we are truly pursuing in this life?”
Believers at the time the Book of Hebrews was written lost their possessions because of Christ. They were reviled. They suffered.
Yet, they remained steadfast in their faith in Christ.
Why?
Because THEY KNEW there was: “a better and more lasting possession.”
*They had Christ.
*They had salvation.
*They had God’s promise.
*They had eternal hope.
They possessed things that THE WORLD CANNOT GIVE.
What about us today?
There is nothing wrong with owning possessions.
There is nothing wrong with owning a home.
There is nothing wrong with having money.
There is nothing wrong with building a future.
But the question is:
Do these things become the primary focus—the “treasure our hearts pursue”?
Something can become a “binding treasure” when we are unwilling to lose it, even if it means sacrificing our faith. Jesus said:
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21)
We may have lost something.
There may be prayers that remain unanswered.
There may be missed opportunities.
We may have suffered a loss.
But do not let the loss of temporary treasures cause you to lose the eternal treasure in Christ.
Worldly treasures can change.
Jobs can change.
Health can change.
The economy can change.
People can change.
Circumstances can change.
Only Christ does not change.
Thus, Hebrews 10:35 reminds us:
“Do not throw away your confidence.”
Reflection:
1. What am I most afraid of losing right now?
2. Does the way I use my time, money, energy, and life show that Christ is my greatest treasure?
Do not trade the eternal for the temporary. Do not let go of Christ simply because life becomes difficult. Remain faithful—for a great reward awaits us. Amen.
