God’s word today:
“Above He said: ‘Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings, and sin offerings You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them’—though they were offered according to the Law. And then He said: ‘Behold, I have come to do Your will.’
HE TAKES AWAY THE FIRST THAT HE MAY ESTABLISH THE SECOND.
And BY THAT WILL WE HAVE BEEN SANCTIFIED once for all through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ. Furthermore, every priest stands ministering daily and repeatedly offering the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But HE, HAVING OFFERED ONE SACRIFICE FOR SINS FOREVER, SAT DOWN at the right hand of God, and NOW HE IS WAITING for the time WHEN HIS ENEMIES ARE MADE HIS FOOTSTOOL.”
(Hebrews 10:8–13)
Hebrews 10:8–13 is a powerful passage for understanding the difference between the Old Testament sacrificial system and the perfect, final redemptive work of Christ.
When Jesus Christ came, the shadow reached its fulfillment.
* Animal sacrifices → fulfilled by the sacrifice of Christ’s body.
* High priest → fulfilled by Christ, the perfect High Priest.
* Repeated sacrifices → replaced by one perfect sacrifice, the body of Jesus.
* Old covenant → fulfilled and established through the new covenant in Christ.
Thus, on the cross, Jesus said: “It is finished.”
(John 19:30)
So:
* No additional sacrifice is needed to perfect Christ’s sacrifice.
* No sin is so great that the blood of Christ must be supplemented by the blood of another sacrifice. * No human effort can add perfection to the work of the cross.
One sacrifice. Once for all. Forever.
That is why we can live with faith, hope, and perseverance.
And following that, the Word of God says:
“He sat down forever at the right hand of God.”
Imagine for a moment:
“Why did Jesus sit down?”
The answer: Because His work of redemption was finished.
Perhaps until now, we have felt the need to keep proving ourselves, feeling we must be good enough for God to love us. Or we feel our past sins make us unworthy to come to Him.
Take note:
Our salvation does not rest on our own perfection, but on the perfect sacrifice of Christ.
*The cross guarantees victory.
*The resurrection proves victory.
*And His coming will fully reveal that victory.
Reflection:
1. Am I still trying to “pay” the debt of my own sin—a debt Christ actually bore on the cross?
2. Amidst troubles and injustice, do I still believe that Christ will ultimately triumph?
Prayer:
“Lord Jesus, thank You for offering Your body once for all for our sins. Help us to stop relying on our own strength and goodness to feel worthy in Your presence. Enable my heart to fully trust that the work of Your cross has completed and perfected the plan for human salvation.
When I see the struggles and evil in the world, strengthen my faith that You, Lord Jesus, have triumphed, and in Your time, all Your enemies will be subdued under Your feet. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
