God’s word today:
“But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises. For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. But GOD FOUND FAULT WITH THE PEOPLE and said: “The days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they DID NOT REMAIN FAITHFUL to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord.”
(Hebrews 8:6-9 NIV)
Notice carefully that God did not find fault with the COVENANT itself, BUT WITH THE PEOPLE. The Israelites failed to keep the covenant. Therefore, the fault was never with God’s law—it was WITH THE HUMAN HEART.
Israelites, God’s people in the Old Testament, promised to obey, yet again and again they failed because sin ruled within them. The Law could show what was right, but it could not give the power to live it – “because they DID NOT REMAIN FAITHFUL to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord.”
Even though there was period when they are rejected, God does not leave His people to continue in their failure. He promised something better: the New Covenant through Jesus Christ.
The New Testament is God’s covenant blessing for the Israelites, as well as for all nations in the world. Previously, God wrote His laws on stone tablets, now He writes them in our hearts. Through the Holy Spirit and His word, He changes us from the inside out.
Perhaps today you feel discouraged by your own weaknesses or repeated failures to follow God. Remember that your hope is not found in trying to do good-works harder but in trusting Christ more deeply. The same Savior who forgives your sins also transforms your heart.
Reflection:
Am I relying on my own strength to please God, or am I allowing Christ to transform my heart through His Word and the Holy Spirit?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the New Covenant established through Jesus Christ. Thank You that You do not merely command me to obey but give me a new heart and Your Spirit to help me walk in Your ways. Continue to transform me from the inside out, so that my life may reflect Your love, holiness, and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
