God’s word today:
“For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. And NO ONE TAKES THIS HONOR FOR HIMSELF, BUT ONLY WHEN CALLED BY GOD, just as Aaron was.”
(Hebrews 5:1-4 ESV)
Hebrews 5:1–4 teaches that the high priests of the Old Testament were men who were called and chosen by God and appointed to serve as mediators between God and His people.
Because the high priests descended from Aaron were ordinary human beings affected by sin, before offering sacrifices for the people, they first had to offer sacrifices for their own sins (Leviticus 16).
This is the great difference between the Aaronic high priests and Jesus Christ, our Great High Priest.
Jesus is sinless, He did not need to offer a sacrifice for Himself (Hebrews 7:26–27). Instead, He offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice once and for all—the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
The Book of Hebrews emphasizes that even the Son of God did not appoint Himself to the office of High Priest. Rather, God the Father bestowed that honor upon Him.
Therefore, true honor is not something we demand or seize for ourselves; it is something God entrusts to us. The high priest did not choose himself; he was called by God to serve as a mediator for His people. Likewise, Jesus was chosen by the Father, and He set the perfect example. Although He is the Son of God, He did not seek glory for Himself. Instead, He submit to the Father’s will and served faithfully, even to the point of giving His life on the cross.
From Jesus we learn that true greatness is born out of humility and obedience to the will of God.
“God, help me to choose the way of humility in all aspect of my life. Amen.”
