😇 Shalom to all.
God’s word today:
Again we will look at some of the things Jesus did as the days of Passover approached.
“When JESUS returned to the Temple and BEGAN TEACHING, the leading priests and elders came up to him. They demanded, “By what authority are you doing all these things? Who gave you the right?” “I’ll tell you by what authority I do these things if you answer one question,” Jesus replied. “Did John’s authority to baptize come from heaven, or was it merely human?” They talked it over among themselves. “If we say it was from heaven, he will ask us why we didn’t believe John. But if we say it was merely human, we’ll be mobbed because the people believe John was a prophet.” So they finally replied, “We don’t know.” And Jesus responded, “Then I WON’T TELL you by what authority I do these things.”
(Matthew 21:23-27 NLT)
When Jesus returned to the temple, He began to teach the people about the Kingdom of God. Instead of listening and seeking truth, the leading priests and elders questioned Him: “By what authority are you doing these things?” They were not asking because they wanted to learn truth, but because their hearts were hardened and Jesus responded by asking about John the Baptist’s authority – THIS QUESTION REVEALED THEIR HEART CONDITION.
They were not concerned about truth — they were concerned about their position, reputation, and control. In the end, they answered, “We don’t know.” Because they refused to acknowledge the truth regarding John, then Jesus chose not to reveal more to them. Though many of the jewish religious leaders (Pharisees and Sadducees) had come to John the baptist and had his baptism (Matt.3:7).
This passage shows an important spiritual principle: pride and stubbornness can prevent us from understanding God’s ways.
Today, the same warning applies to people. It is possible to be close to religion and doing many religious activities but far from God. The Lord is not looking for outward position or appearance, but for a humble and teachable heart.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I acknowledge You have all authority in heaven and on earth. Be merciful upon me Lord and help me to have a humble heart that is willing to listen, believe, and obey Your Word. Amen.
Bless you
