God’s word today:
“MAKE EVERY EFFORT to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”
(Ephesians 4:3-6 NIV)
The word “make every effort” shows that the unity among christians is not something that happens automatically without effort. In the original language, this word carries the meaning of:
• being earnest,
• being persistent,
• and being fully intentional in guarding something precious.
Notice that apostle Paul does tell there is a part of the human resposibility “to keep the unity.” Therefore, “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit”, means:
• choosing humility over pride,
• choosing patience over anger,
• choosing forgiveness over bitterness,
• and choosing peace over quarrels.
The unity of the Spirit within family, the church is very precious, because through this unity the world can see Christ. A unity in life of believers shows that the Holy Spirit is truly at work within each person.
Today, let us ask ourselves: Do my attitudes, actions, and words build unity or damage it?
May the Holy Spirit help us to live in peace toward one another, so that the unity among believers may be preserved and the name of the Lord be glorified. Amen.
