God’s word today:
“so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
(Ephesians 3:10-11 ESV)
This verse opens our eyes to the fact that the church is more than just a gathering of believers who worship every week. The church has a cosmic role—a role that goes beyond what we can see with our physical eyes in this world—reaching “in the heavenly realms,” which is meant “in the spiritual realm.” GOD CHOSEN THE CHURCH OF CHRIST AS HIS VENUES TO REVEAL HIS WISDOM, even TO THE RULERS OF THE SPIRITUAL REALMS.
Interestingly, the Bible does not say that God’s wisdom is revealed by angels, but by the church. The church, made up of ordinary people, saved by grace, is used by God to demonstrate His glorious plan. The existence of the life of the congregation itself—restored sinners, living in love, forgiveness, and unity in Christ—is already a living testimony.
“Manifold wisdom of God” means God’s wisdom is rich and varied, unlimited. The church is declaring and showing “the manifold wisdom of God” when the congregation of Christ wants to:
•live in love in the midst of a world full of hatred,
•remain hopeful in the midst of suffering,
•live holy among people who compromise,
•and unite in Christ despite different backgrounds.
Every time we live as a congregation faithful to God’s word—in family, in society—we are carrying out this divine task: to make known, show, and reveal God’s wisdom.
I realize and am grateful that I can live, not just breathe and do common things on this earth, but I live as part of the Church of Christ which is called to show the various kinds of God’s wisdom even to the spiritual realm. Amen.
