😇 Shalom to all.
God’s word today:
“Do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
(Ephesians 6:4)
A father is called not to “control” his children, but to shepherd their hearts. Discipline is still necessary, but it must be wrapped in love and understanding. Every correction should draw a child closer to God, not push them away. There are two sides that must go together—restraining ourselves so we do not wound a child’s heart, and intentionally building them up in the Lord.
What does it mean to “provoke a child to anger”?
It is not merely causing a child to be upset for a moment, but a pattern of parental attitudes that produces hurt, bitterness, and rebellion in the child’s heart.
Some practical examples:
•Being too harsh or authoritarian: always demanding without giving space for the child to ask questions or express feelings.
•Inconsistency: forbidding something today and allowing it tomorrow; changing rules that confuse and frustrate the child.
•Constant criticism: correcting more than affirming; the child feels they are never good enough.
•Comparing: “look at your friend…”, “look at your sibling…” — this wounds a child’s self-worth.
•Lack of attention or time: being physically present but not emotionally present.
•Punishing without love and explanation: discipline without understanding feels like rejection.
All these can accumulate into hidden anger—one day expressed as rebellion, distance, or loss of trust.
On the other hand, the second calling is to raise them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
This means not only teaching God’s Word, but also becoming a living example of it: patient, loving, consistent, and reverent toward God. Children learn not only from words, but from the life of their parents.
Today, let us ask:
Do our words and attitudes build up our children’s hearts, or do they wound them?
May God enable fathers to obey His command in Ephesians 6:4. Amen.
Bless you
