Daily Bread: Guard Your Heart

😇 Shalom to all.
God’s word today:

“So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the FUTILITY of their THINKING. They are DARKENED in their UNDERSTANDING and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the HARDENING of their HEARTS. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of IMPURITY, and they are full of GREED.”
(Ephesians 4:17-19 NIV)

In this passage, Paul lovingly warns believers not to return to their old way of life.

He describes the condition of those who live without acknowledging God. Their thinking becomes futile — meaning their lives may look full on the outside, but inside there is emptiness. Without acknowledging God, people search for meaning in success, pleasure, or possessions, yet their souls remain unsatisfied.

Paul says their understanding is darkened. This is not about intelligence, but about spiritual vision. When someone continually ignores even rejecting God, their ability to recognize truth becomes weaker. Right and wrong become blurred.

At the root of it all is a hardened heart. A heart does not become hard in one day. It happens little by little — when conviction is ignored, when sin is justified, when pride replaces humility. Over time, a person loses spiritual sensitivity. What once troubled the conscience no longer does.

As sensitivity fades, self-control weakens. Fleshly desires take control. Greed grows. The person keeps wanting more, but never finds peace.

Dear Christ’s church, Paul reminds us of this not to judge others, but to guard our own hearts. We too can drift if we are not careful.

The good news is this: in Christ, our hearts do not have to remain hard. The Holy Spirit keeps our hearts tender. God’s Word renews our minds. When we stay close to Jesus, we remain sensitive to His voice.

Let us pray today:
“My Lord, please keep my heart soft. Protect my mind from empty thinking, and help me live in Your light and truth.” Amen.

Bless you
